Education, certifications, and regulation take a significant role when it comes to being an aesthetician. After all, without education how would we have learned our trade? Our title as Aesthetician or Cosmetologist holds great weight in the fact that we went through school, became licensed, and then furthered our knowledge in workshops and seminars. Are you aware that sales clerks in retail store beauty departments are being labeled as “Cosmeticians”! If this does not bother you, perhaps you’re in the wrong field. This labeling of a Cosmetician is a mockery of our profession and skill. How do we prevent this? The answer is simple: education and consumer awareness.

Some of the top educators in the field of aesthetics are working hard to provide you with the most innovative findings in skin, ingredients, and technology. A more informed and educated You paves the way for professional relationships, superior client care, and overall increased visibility as a skin care professional. AIA not only helps contribute to your professional success via education, insurance, and financing availabilities. The AIA alliance is gaining momentum and aiming to improve the working conditions of Aestheticians at the State level by providing a standard guideline for aestheticians throughout the U.S.

With AIA you have an added credibility to your title that can increase your exposure. You have a voice; empower it with AIA. As professional skin care providers, it is your responsibility to speak up and praise your educators, manufacturers, and representatives for a job well done. The same holds true for your voice against unethical practices and faulty products and equipment. This can include the department store clerk that is labeled a “Cosmetician” and skin care manufacturers selling chemical peels online for consumers. This is our profession – we need to take it back!

Raising a voice for ethical praises or complaints is important for aestheticians as a whole. It is up to us to band together and pave the way for equal privileges in every state and offer advanced levels of aesthetics. AIA’s distinguished book for the Bachelor level is near completion and will be available soon for you to start studying and prepare for the test. That will be formally given at the Dallas International Congress of Esthetics and Spa conference in March 2009. This will be your first hand opportunity to get an in-depth knowledge of the science of aesthetics. This includes anatomy and physiology of the skin and microorganisms, color theory, aromatherapy, galvanic and microcurrent treatments, and more. So stay tuned and start with our warm-up quiz to get your mind moving. Simply turn to page 17 – the answers are in the magazine!
